This is April Fools day. So my subject is: who is fooling who and who is telling the truth?
My answer is going to be seen by some as “political” as if the term means something nasty. We do the same with “religion.” Both politics and religion are at rooted sacred, with one dealing with governance and the other dealing with divinity. Politics sacred?!! Have you seen the actual copy of the Declaration of Independence? In my view, that document is biblical in the deepest sense, because it teaches the same virtues, concern for and care for every citizen, because each of us is endowed by God with “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”
Given the above, I am going to some readers appear to be prejudiced. Prejudice, however, is an irrational view of persons or even events and ignores fact. Prejudice fools people. You be the judge as to whether I am logical and factual. Here it is: we are being fooled by many unscrupulous political leaders in both parties. That is a fact. However, there is another fact: there is an enormous difference in the policies of the two parties as well as in the overall behaviors of the two parties. As to policies, which party is serving the people and which party the rich one percent? Obamacare has been in the news, at first declared a failure. Now over l0 million are signed up including those added to Medicaid.
Which states are saying no to millions of additional people -all poor - who could be added to Medicaid? All Republican controlled. Which party has created these programs, social security, Medicare, and Medicaid? The democratic party. Now we have an added health care plan. Who did it? The de about the mocratic party. Which party with millions from the rich sought to fool the people about this plan ? The Koch brothers have spent millions to destroy the plan. Two big evidences from adverts designed to keep young people from signing up: a picture of a young woman awaiting a doctor to examine her private parts. Up looms an ugly face of Uncle Sam. How immature!! Another ad by the same rich boys: a very sincere attractive women almost weeping saying she has been deceived by the health plan. The truth: she turned up to be an actress, and this fact went viral in the internet.
Watch two cable stations, one Fox and the other MSMBC. Which constantly fools people? Has anyone seen the documentary, “Out Foxed.” Hundreds of hours of Fox were collected in movies, and then people were asked to note the political themes. Unbelievable repetitions of themes by their speakers, obviously programed. Spend time yourself watching and listening. Do you hear facts and logic, or do you hear opinions and suspicions? Do any of their programs lay down historical contexts for understanding an issue? None. Watch on MSNBC, Rachael Madow and Lawrence O’Donnell, Chris Mathews, etc. They are passionate, yes. I challenge anyone to prove that they are not factual, not reasonable, and most all of all, don’t present issues in context.
Another perspective. There are five living presidents. Which ones have ---literally—become world citizens? Bill Clinton with his program and Jimmy Carter with his, including building tens of thousands of homes for the poor. Both have now served people needs in the millions. Throw in Al Gore as a world citizen with one major concern: the environment. Today, as to the latter, in Chicago Trib, the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), made up of the world’s top scientists, have again stated that we are as a world people in serious danger of destroying our planet.
As recently reported in a Commonweal Magazine, in an article on the environment, it noted that the only political entity in the entire Western world that does not believe that we humans are causing global warning (along with poisoning our two most precious minerals, air and water) is the Republican Party. Two Republican members of the House Science Committee do not believe in evolution. Several popes acknowledge that a theology of evolution accepts its facts and adds divine causality. Speaking of popes, which party feels aligned with Pope Francis and his stunning spiritual impact on the world? Ask Boehmer, Republican speaker of the House and Rep Paul Ryan, both Catholic, how their views resonate with this Pope.
Enough. We must capture the House this November and keep the Senate, so Obama can get more people agenda going. Sincerely, John G
